High School Assistant Principal (Tutorial House) Non-Union Position - Not Covered by Collective Bargaining Agreement Status: Exempt FTE: Full-Time As of: 7/1/2026
Founded in 1947, the United Nations International School (UNIS) is a Pre-K through Grade 12 independent school in Manhattan, serving a diverse, global community. UNIS seeks an Assistant Principal for the Tutorial House. Reporting to the High School Principal, the successful candidate will demonstrate high emotional intelligence, an international mindset, and the ability to think both strategically and tactically to lead within a complex school environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Leadership of Student Support Services - The Assistant Principal is the primary driver of student success, ensuring all learners are positioned to thrive academically and socio-emotionally.
Case Management & Advocacy: Leads the multidisciplinary referral team to monitor student progress, address social-emotional or academic concerns, and facilitate collaborative intervention plans.
Strategic Programming: Coordinates essential student-facing initiatives, including the advisory program, assemblies, student orientation, and major school events (e.g., commencement).
Data-Driven Decision Making: Analyzes academic and behavioral data to inform support strategies, monitor progress, and guide student placement and scheduling needs in collaboration with counseling and academic offices.
2. Management of Student Conduct & School Culture - The Assistant Principal serves as the custodian of the school’s community standards and the visible leader of its extracurricular life.
Discipline & Policy Enforcement: Oversees the implementation of the Student Handbook, serving as the primary lead for investigating and resolving behavioral concerns, policy violations, and academic integrity issues.
Restorative Practice: Facilitates complex problem-solving meetings with students, families, and faculty to address behavioral patterns, promoting restorative justice and consistent adherence to the code of conduct.
Visible Leadership & Community Presence: Actively models school values by maintaining a consistent presence at school-wide events, student activities, and after-school functions; fosters a vibrant school spirit by engaging directly with students and families outside the traditional classroom setting.
Community Standards: Partners with faculty and students to cultivate a positive school culture, regularly reviewing behavioral expectations and maintaining clear, empathetic communication with all stakeholders.
3. Faculty Supervision & Operational Leadership - In collaboration with the Tut House Principal, the Assistant Principal supports the operational excellence of the Tutorial House through proactive management and instructional leadership.
Supervision & Professional Growth: Directs, supervises, and evaluates faculty and staff, providing the guidance and appraisal necessary to maintain high standards of teaching and professional practice.
Operational Management: Maintains the smooth functioning of the school through master scheduling, emergency preparedness coordination, oversight of the high school attendance database, and coordination of all attendance-related issues and serves as the key point of contact for staff in the Principal’s absence.
Strategic Planning: Partners with the Principal to recruit and onboard faculty, manage staffing needs, and ensure that the daily operations align with the school’s long-term educational goals.
4. Community Engagement: Serves as an ambassador for the UNIS Mission, articulating the school’s philosophy to families and the wider public.
Admissions & Enrollment: Supports the growth and vibrancy of the school by participating in the admissions process, meeting with prospective families, and providing input on student placement.
Performs special projects and other duties as required, consistent with the responsibilities of the role.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to successfully perform this job. A successful candidate will meet many of these requirements and have the desire and capacity to learn the rest on the job.
Highly developed conflict-resolution, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Experience providing comprehensive school counseling services that support students’ academic progress, social-emotional well-being, and college readiness while collaborating closely with faculty, families, and administration.
Deep knowledge of current educational research, international curricular frameworks, and student support systems.
Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build relationships across a global community.
Demonstrated expertise in teacher supervision, appraisal, and professional growth preferred.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
3+ years of experience within an international, multilingual, and diverse school setting, or the equivalent combination of education, training, and transferable experience to successfully perform essential functions of the job.
M.A. or M.Ed. in Educational Leadership, Administration, Curriculum, or a related field preferred, but experience is the most important qualification.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
$140,000 - $150,000 Commensurate with Experience
