DEFINITION Under the direction of the superintendent or designee, serves as the education leader and chief administrator; oversees all operations of the school; ensures and coordinates all aspects of an effective instructional program that meets the needs of all learners; ensures and promotes a safe learning environment, ensures a positive school culture; plans, implements, and directs the operational procedures and processes of the site; plans, develops, and implements procedures for evaluating staff and programs; plans, develop, and conducts staff development and staff training programs and activities; plans, coordinates and ensures positive parent and community involvement; and performs related functions as directed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Serve as the instructional leader, collaborating with staff to plan, design and implement curriculum and instruction that meets the needs of each student • Plan, design, and conduct follow-through strategies pertaining to curriculum development and the implementation of instructional programs and activities designed to meet the needs of all students • Oversee, implement, and monitor the WASC process to continuously improve academic excellence, equitable outcomes for all students, access to every learner, and program enhancements • Ensure culturally relevant and responsive instruction and practices that support all students • Ensure a culture that promotes effective teacher-driven collaboration focused on student learning, the use of data to drive instruction, teacher dialogue and shared practices/learning to improve classroom instruction, and student results • Implement and stay current with effective use of technology to enhance instruction and improve administrative and management functions • Plan, develop, organize, and conduct staff development and training • Create a positive, supportive and inclusive school culture of excellence that promotes teamwork and collaboration among teachers, staff, students and families • Supervise and ensure effective implementation of counseling and guidance, attendance, special education and other programs designed to ensure high levels of student learning • Oversee athletic and performing arts, including walk-on coaches and volunteers; adhere to all district and state requirements including all pre-employment and volunteer requirements • Observe, support, supervise, and evaluate the performance of certificated and classified staff, including site management, consistent with the District’s evaluation system and timeline • Maintain high visibility and physical presence in classrooms and throughout the campus • Ensure a proactive and progressive student discipline system that encourages positive behavior and provides opportunities for learning and remediation of behavior • Ensure high-quality implementation of schoolwide social emotional learning strategies and programs • Coordinate a master calendar of programs and activities to achieve the determined goals and objectives • Plan, develop, and implement budget planning and expenditure control procedures • Monitor and audit expenditure proposals and allocate instructional supply, material, and equipment funds appropriately • Plan, develop, and implement effective administrative support systems, and delegate appropriate areas of responsibility to staff • Work closely with staff and School Site Council to assess the school’s educational and program needs, and develop short-term and long-range planning strategies for creating an optimal educational program • Confer, consults with, and advise District, public and private agency personnel, and parents concerning student educational and behavior problems, and determines alternative problem solutions • Work collaboratively with school site parent groups Manage a comprehensive physical facility, identifying needs and recommending additions, modifications, and services
• Demonstrate cultural competence and responsiveness in interactions, decision-making, communication, and processes •Engage in continuous learning through professional reflection, professional development opportunities and active collaboration with colleagues •Communicate effectively with parents and encourage parent involvement •Facilitate collaborative partnerships with outside agencies, businesses and educational partners • Confer with site and District instructional support personnel in decision-making processes and in the development of alternative approaches to solving educational concerns and issues • Participate in the formation and functions of District and site advisory groups • Assist in the development, implementation, interpretation, and administration of policies, rules and regulations, and adhere to the negotiated employee agreements • Establish administrative review procedures to ensure a maximum utilization of monetary and human resources • Establish and maintain procedures for the resolution of conflict in an effort to maintain a high level of staff morale • May be responsible for the management, monitoring, auditing, and evaluating of specially funded programs • Plan, develop, and provide, as required, management reports pertaining to the educational climate and the functions and activities of the school facility
QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: • Best practices in secondary schools, including instruction, social and emotional learning and behavior • Equity, access and inclusion practices as it relates to students, parents, staff, and other educational partners • Principles, techniques, strategies, goals, and objectives of public education at the secondary level • Philosophical, economic, and legal aspects of public education • Procedures, methods, and trends of organization and management of a secondary school • Curriculum development strategies, instructional delivery systems, and program evaluation processes • Use and application of technology and innovation • Methods, techniques, procedures, and strategies concerning the assessment and evaluation of behavior management programs • Current legal mandates, policies, regulations, and operational procedures pertaining to student discipline • Evaluation techniques for determining program activity and personnel effectiveness • Human relation strategies, conflict resolution strategies, and team building principles and techniques Ability to: • Demonstrate strong and effective organizational and leadership skills • Manage, lead, and direct the functions and activities of a comprehensive high school • Systematically analyze problems, determine alternative problem solutions, and make appropriate and effective decisions • Communicate effectively in oral and written form • Understand and carry out oral and written directions with minimal accountability control • Establish and maintain effective and cooperative organization, public, and community relationships • Engage regularly in collaboration and shared decision-making processes • Demonstrate a high level of interpersonal skills while ensuring high levels of accountability for self and staff • Successfully diffuse difficult situations and navigate conflict through conflict mediation, collaboration, and other strategies while using tact, diplomacy, and good judgment • Be receptive to constructive feedback • Build a culture of collaboration and innovation with a growth mindset • Meet demanding timelines and schedules • Effectively motivate, train, and evaluate the performance of assigned staff
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION Experience: Five years of successful teaching experience, preferably at the secondary level plus two years of successful administrative experience at the secondary level Education: Equivalent to the completion of a Master of Arts or higher degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in educational administration, instructional technology, and/or a closely related field Certification Requirement: • Possession of a valid California Administrative Services Credential • Valid California Driver’s License
PHYSICAL DEMANDS This medium work position classification involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds and frequent walking or standing. This work also requires visual acuity. In order to be considered capable of doing medium work, an individual should have the ability to do substantially all the activities.
