The EAL (English as an Additional Language) Teacher is responsible for identifying, assessing, and instructing High School and Middle School children whose first language is not English and who require support in developing academic language in English.
Summary of duties
Conduct WIDA assessments to determine initial placement or suitability for admission to ASL
Provide high quality instruction based on current research-based best practices comprising a combination of classroom support, small group and one-to-one sessions depending on the needs of the child
Build an awareness of the needs of the EAL student among the faculty, and suggest teaching strategies and practices that will enhance the learning experience
Maintain open communication with families, including meeting with them to demonstrate and support effective English-learning practices
Work flexibly and collaboratively with the other teachers across both divisions in middle and high school, sharing information and communicating effectively
Participate in regular and purposeful meetings with colleagues and departments, including the EAL team, the Student Support Services team and grade-level teams
Organize and participate in activities outside of the classroom that promote the linguistic diversity of the school
Participate actively in the life of the School, through attendance at events, committee membership and leadership of extracurricular activities
Any other duties reasonably requested by administration (Middle School and High School Principals and Director of Teaching and Learning
Essential qualifications/experience:
A bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline
Experience and commitment to working collaboratively in a team-focused environment
Experience with differentiating instruction to meet the learning needs of all students
Training and experience in intercultural competency initiatives to support diversity, equity and inclusion in the classroom and workplace
Demonstrate experience working with and administering EAL-specific assessment tools to inform language acquisition
Demonstrably strong oral and written communication skills
Significant recent professional development germane to the position
Commitment to ongoing professional development related to EAL, multilingualism and best practices in multilingual education.
Substantive experience teaching EAL students ages 10-18 and a demonstrated understanding of the stages of language acquisition with a solid understanding of the linguistics of English (grammar, syntax, phonology, etc)
Excellent technology skills; up-to-date knowledge of current trends in classroom technology
A proven commitment to the safeguarding and welfare of children
Demonstrated knowledge of safeguarding practices and experience supporting student welfare
Desirable qualifications/experience:
Advanced degree preferred
Significant coursework, certification or degree in EAL or related field
Experience in delivering professional development in the field of EAL
Teaching experience in an international environment
