The MS Community Action Integrationist works across middle school teams and departments in Grades 5-8 to offer community action experiences, with an emphasis on curriculum-embedded service learning. Collaborating closely with MS admin, faculty, the K-12 Director of Community Action, the Director of Global Citizenship and the Office of Teaching & Learning, this position will continue to develop a shared understanding of the School’s community action framework in the Middle School and facilitate dynamic and engaging activities for all MS students. This position includes lead teacher responsibility for two middle school elective classes.
Brief summary of major responsibilities:
Coordinate and communicate middle school (MS) community service, community engagement and service learning initiatives, ensuring they reflect current and best practices
Align MS community action work with the school's courageous global citizenship and sustainability initiatives
Cultivate and support community partnerships involving MS student participation
Research and investigate service-learning opportunities in London
Teach two Grade 7/8 electives on community action related topics
Co-teach and embed inquiry-based service learning topics and projects across MS grade levels and disciplines
Oversee and facilitate grade-level community action experiences, including facilitating and supporting the Grade 1 and Grade 5 Grandfriend Partnership (Intergenerational Community Engagement), Grade 6 Granville Community Kitchen, Grade 7 Ladbroke Grove walking tour, and Grade 8 Human Rights project
Support and facilitate student-based groups connected to identity and social justice
Collaborate with the PCA (Parent Community Association) to partner on community engagement events related to community action
Partner with students to support individual student community-based projects and advocacy projects
Participate in co-planning units and lessons to embed service learning in the curriculum
Coordinate and meet regularly with the Middle School Admin Team, K-12 Director of Community Action and LS Community Action Coordinators
Provide logistical support for Lower School service-learning coordinators/programs
Report regularly to school community regarding ongoing programs and celebrate student involvement in MS community action programs through news stories
Seek out current research and literature on best practice in the domain of service learning
Participate actively in the life of the School, through attendance at events, committee membership and leadership of co-curricular activities
Any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the Middle School Principal or K-12 Director of Community Action.
Essential qualifications/experience:
A bachelor's degree in education or similarly relevant discipline
Substantive experience working in a school or other educational setting
Significant experience leading, developing and implementing curricular and co-curricular Community Action initiatives, and fostering relationships with community partners
Training and experience in anti-bias education and intercultural competency initiatives to support diversity, equity and inclusion in the classroom and workplace
Significant recent professional development germane to the position
Substantive experience managing student programs
Experience and commitment to working collaboratively in a team-focused environment
Willingness to contribute to school life outside of the classroom
Demonstrated initiative, creativity, and a passion for learning through community engagement
Excellent computer skills and integration of technology into the curriculum
Strong oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated knowledge of safeguarding practices and experience supporting student welfare
