Sidwell Friends School, a co-educational Quaker day school with campuses in Bethesda, MD, and Washington, DC, seeks a full-time 7th-8th Grade Science Teacher who genuinely appreciates the Quaker philosophy that underlies the school for SY 25-26. Teaching positions at Sidwell Friends School are campus-based and in-person. This position is based on the Washington, D.C. campus and begins in late August 2026.
Reporting to the Middle School Principal, this position will teach two integrated science courses. The two courses work in tandem to tell the story of life on our planet, Earth’s place in the Universe, and the conditions that allow life to flourish on Earth. The 7th grade course is largely focused on the biosphere, while the 8th grade course is more heavily geared to Earth and Space systems. Both courses aim to make the science content relevant to students through connections to global issues such as biodiversity loss and global warming. Students need to make meaningful connections between many fields of science: ecology, evolution, genetics, human biology, geology, astronomy, atomic structure, and physical science concepts such as energy, heat, and chemical change. The ideal candidate will be able to weave together a wide range of science topics into two cohesive courses that inspire students to appreciate the intricacies of the natural world and to be engaged stewards of our planet. The teacher is responsible for serving as an Advisor to a group of 7th and 8th grade students and delivering weekly Advisory lessons.
Other responsibilities include but are not limited to writing student reports three times a year; annual parent-teacher conferences; effective communication and collaboration with students, colleagues, and families; attendance at meetings; duties such as lunch and break duty; and collaborating with Science colleagues in the Middle School and other divisions.
Qualifications & Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree is required and must be conferred by the position's start date. A Master’s degree is preferred.

Previous teaching experience, preferably at least 3-5 years in a middle or high school setting.

Active CPR certification or can quickly obtain one.

Ability to work in-person Monday - Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Salary
- Salary Range $62,096-$136,496. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
