Position Description: KIS High School College Counselors ensure a robust counseling program with a focus on comprehensive university guidance. KIS college counselors guide students and their families through the university search and application process, create positive relationships, and help each student find the best possible university match or post-KIS option. KIS counselors help ensure that the school has a fully implemented comprehensive guidance and counseling program that supports the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students.
Primary duties and responsibilities for KIS High School/College Counselors include:
Student Guidance: Counsel individual and/or groups of students in developing their academic, personal/social, and career/university plans.
University Guidance: Provide specific, appropriate support and guidance for students’ university application process
University Relationships: Build strong relationships with university admissions representatives.
Community Referrals: Provide counseling and connect students with community resources for specialized services.
Standardized Assessments: Assist with the coordination and administration of standardized assessments. Collect, analyze, and interpret student achievement data.
School Admissions and Transitions: Collaborate with School Admissions and the High School Administration team to review new student applications, orient new students and families to high school, and facilitate smooth transitions.
Advisory Program: Develop and organize the advisory program in collaboration with grade-level teams. Create large and small group guidance units, sessions, and activities to address academic, personal/social, and career needs.
Student Support: Serve on both school-wide and secondary Student Support teams to ensure coordinated support for students.
University Guidance
Relationships with University Admissions: Develop strong connections with university admissions representatives.
Proactive Guidance: Proactively advise students and parents in the university search and application process.
Letters of Recommendation: Provide well-written letters of recommendation for students' college applications
Admission Documents: Review admission documents and perform graduation credit checks for high school applicants.
Course Selection: Assist with appropriate course selection and scheduling in the secondary school.
Standardized Testing: Manage standardized tests such as PSAT, SAT, and AP.
Member of the High School Student Support Team
Student Referrals: Collaborate with the Student Support Team to plan interventions and discuss student referrals.
Meetings and Interventions: Attend meetings with parents, teachers, and support staff to discuss educational and psychological assessments and plan interventions.
Proactive Academic Support: Work closely with school administration and teachers to enhance students' academic performance. Implement interventions following the MTSS model of support and communicate progress to students and families.
Counseling
Personal and Social Development: Help students meet specific personal and social developmental goals.
Counseling Plans: Create tailored counseling plans to address individual student needs and goals.
Collaboration with Teachers: Work with classroom teachers to implement strategies that enhance student success in the learning environment.
Guidance Program: Provide a comprehensive developmental counseling program covering academic, personal/social, university/career, and global perspectives to all students.
Advisory Program
Curriculum Development: Assist in the development, review, and implementation of the Grade 9-12 advisory curriculum based on academic, personal/social, and career needs.
Skills Development: Teach necessary developmental, organizational, social/personal, and functional skills within the advisory program.
Organizational Status:
The High School/College Counselor reports to the High School Principal.
Qualifications and Experience
Master’s Degree and valid certification (or the substantial equivalent) in School Counseling or another relevant field
A minimum of three years full-time school high school counseling experience; international school counseling experience preferred
