Job Position: Middle School Physical Education/Health Teacher & Assistant MS Athletics Director
Job Description:
St. Mary’s Academy is seeking a Middle School Physical Education/Health Teacher and Assistant MS Athletic Director. This is a full-time, 10-month, exempt position reporting to the middle school principal, beginning in August 2023. SMA’s Middle School Physical Education & Health program strives to improve the physical and mental ability of all students, through exercise and game play so that students will develop lifelong fitness and health skills. The ideal candidate brings experience developing and teaching physical education & health classes at the Middle School level that are grounded in research-based teaching practices as well as experience supporting athletic programs.
Through regular conversations with their division principal and colleagues, St. Mary’s Academy teachers learn and understand their job responsibilities. It has been a hallmark of teachers throughout the history of SMA that their work goes beyond the classroom and includes not only the academic preparation of the student, but also the emotional, social and spiritual development of students. Additionally, teachers at St. Mary’s Academy are enthusiastic and energetic and they find support for new ideas. This enthusiasm is encouraged and applauded at SMA. Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop & teach physical education & health classes with a focus on overall skill development and fitness, including gross motor skill development, strength, endurance, flexibility, body movement, and expression;
Provide age-appropriate Health lessons focusing on skills-based health methods of teaching that relate to National Health Standards including but not limited to nutrition & wellness, mental health, human and development;
Teach in multiple grades with an awareness of the developmental needs of pre-adolescent children;
Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities;
Collaborate with departmental colleagues on curriculum design and development;
Maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress and development;
Provide periodic updates to parents about student progress, via both written reports and in-person conferences;
Work in partnership with SMA’s Athletics Department to support after school practices and competitions, including:
Setup of Athletics equipment before practices and competitions
Coordinating Middle School athletic event needs
Organizing and inventorying PE & Athletics equipment
Other tasks as assigned;
Adhere to and support the mission of St. Mary’s Academy.
All teachers are also responsible for a variety of duties and tasks throughout the day; the principal will make these assignments and share them with faculty. These tasks and assignments change as needs of the community are determined.

Education and qualifications should include the following:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in health, physical education or a closely related field

Knowledge of varied pedagogy and trends in physical education/coaching instruction
