About Greeneville City Schools - Greeneville High School
Located in East Tennessee, Greeneville is one of the state’s top-performing school districts.
1:1 Technology
Technology plays a critical role in helping Greeneville’s students master the 21st century skills relevant to both present and future success. All students in grades 2-12 have laptops to use in the classroom. These devices are being utilized and incorporated into curriculum in a variety of ways by enthusiastic GCS educators. GCS is committed to meeting the needs of our students in a student-centered and engaging learning environment. District teachers and students utilize Canvas, to daily deliver and receive content-rich, robust instruction. Canvas, specifically designed for K-12 teachers and students, is a cloud-based learning management system that connects all the digital tools and resources teachers use into one space.
Microsoft Imagine Academy
Greeneville High School and Greeneville Middle School students had the opportunity to enroll in the cutting-edge Microsoft Imagine Academy. This Academy allowed students to work toward industry level certifications in a vast array of technological areas including programming, application suite specialization, and networ...k administration. Several students and more than one educator have finalized their certifications through the Academy.
LEGO Robotics Teams
The Greeneville City School District has competitive elementary and middle school FIRST LEGO League Robotics teams located at Hal Henard Elementary, Highland Elementary, Tusculum View Elementary and Greeneville Middle School.
About Our Schools & Facilities
The Greeneville City School District consists of four (5) elementary schools, including an online school, one (1) middle school, and one (1) high school serving approximately 2750 students. The system also serves as the fiscal agent for the Greene Technology Center, which provides technology education classes for students in Greene County and Greeneville City.
Kathryn W. Leonard Central Office
The district’s administrative offices are located in downtown Greeneville at the Kathryn W. Leonard Central Office on Depot Street. The building was donated to the district by the family of Mrs. Leonard in her memory and honor.
EastView, Hal Henard, Highland, Tusculum View, and TOPS Elementary Schools
The elementary schools offer art, music, and guidance services as well as physical education and library services. A Spanish program is also offered. EastView Elementary and Tusculum View Elementary have both been recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools of Distinction as well as receiving Reward School status. Highland Elementary has also been designated as a Leadership Academy, where leadership skills are developed.
Greeneville Middle School
Greeneville Middle School offers band, chorus, foreign language, and a Microsoft IT Academy that allows students to earn Microsoft Certifications. GMS was the only school selected in Tennessee as a Microsoft Showcase School in 2018.
Greeneville High School
Greeneville High School (GHS) offers more than 160 courses and operated on a block schedule format, which is composed of four class periods of 90 minutes per day. Advanced Placement (AP) offerings include Biology, Calculus AB, Chemistry, English, European History, Human Geography, Music Theory, Physics, Psychology, U.S. History, and U.S. Government. Greeneville High School also offers a course for the U.S. Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps and a Microsoft IT Academy. Greeneville High School was recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of the Best High Schools in Tennessee.

Greene Technology Center
The Greeneville Technology Center is now a satellite center for the Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Morristown and offers classes in Automotive Repair, Industrial Electricity, Collision Repair, Computer Science, Cosmetology, Criminal Justice, Culinary Arts, Green Technology, Health Science, Machine Tool Technology, Pre-Engineering, and Welding.
Preschool Program
Greeneville City provides a full-day preschool program for 3- and 4- year old children from families who meet the eligibility requirements of Head Start or are educationally at-risk. Priority is given to children of Families First parents.
Extended School Program (ESP)
The Extended School Program (ESP) offers before and after school care for children enrolled at each of the four (4) elementary schools and offers care during times when school is not in session, including summer months. Parents pay for these services on a sliding-fee scale based on family income. All schools in the system also offer after-school programs for remediation and/or enrichment.
Transportation/Nutrition
Greeneville City provides bus transportation for students who reside within the city limits. A breakfast and lunch program is available at all schools and meets all state and federal requirements.
Teachers/Administration
Approximately 242 teachers and administrators compose Greeneville City’s professional staff. Of these, six have doctoral degrees, 134 have master’s degrees, and 31 have specialist degrees. The average years of experience is 15.17. With the additional paraprofessional and other staff positions, the system employs approximately 448 people.
Professional Development
Greeneville serves as one of only two Professional Development Center sites in the state and serves the region with quality professional development. This provides world-class professional learning for educators in the seventeen school districts in upper east Tennessee.
Funding/Financials
Greeneville City continues to allocate more than 75 percent of its total budget for instructional expenditures. The state provides 50 percent, and the federal government provides 2 percent of the funding. The other 48 percent comes from local sources.
