Mater Dei Catholic High School (MDCHS), in coordination with the Diocese of San Diego, is seeking an experienced visionary leader as its next Principal. The successful candidate will be an experienced educational leader who is deeply committed to further the development of the faith life and academic excellence of the school. The position is effective July 1, 2022.
The Principal is the lead teacher for the school. His or her primary role is to ensure that the school’s mission is embodied throughout every aspect of the community, from the curriculum and student activities to relationships with faculty and staff. MDCHS is a part of Mater Dei Catholic, which is a co-ed, TK-12, diocesan school located on a beautiful 48-acre campus in Chula Vista, California. Mater Dei Catholic is made up of:
Mater Dei Juan Diego Academy, a TK-8 dual-language school that currently enrolls 444 students (an increase of 67 students from the previous year),
Mater Dei Catholic High School, a college-preparatory school which enrolls 1,035 students (an increase of 52 students from the previous year), and
Juan Diego Adult Center, which offers free English and citizenship classes for up to 300 adults, on campus and in several parishes nearby.

Works with the campus ministers to nurture the faith formation of those in the school community, by providing many and varied opportunities for spiritual growth
Ensures a quality Catholic religious education instruction of students
Maintains appropriate communications with feeder elementary schools
Collaborates with staff to give witness to the Catholic identity of the school, including religious signs, symbols, and displays
Provides opportunities for the school community to celebrate liturgies and prayer services
Ensures coordination of the student service program
Supports community cohesion by making every effort to create a culture of inclusivity, including respect and acceptance of students of other faiths, races, and ethnicities
Strives to make MDCHS an instrument of evangelization for all who enter its doors
Keeps the needs and welfare of students central to all decision-making
Directs faculty assignments and student schedules

In collaboration with the President, creates student recruitment and retention strategies, primarily building a program that ensures excellent student outcomes
Recruits, interviews, and selects the school faculty and academic team members
Under the direction of the President, develops and monitors the educational budget
Initiates appropriate consultation with the Office for Schools
Complies with diocesan, state, federal and local laws and policies
Directs development of annual progress reports to WCEA/ WASC and keeps accreditation efforts current
Convenes and moderates appropriate meetings, including faculty and staff
Coordinates with the Principal of the elementary school and the Director of the adult school regarding the use of the campus and scheduling of activities
Religious & Professional Qualifications for Principalship
All Principal candidates must be approved by the school’s President, Director of the Office for Schools on behalf of the Bishop of San Diego, and recommended by the MDCHS Selection Committee before they can be hired.
Candidates for Principalship in the Diocese of San Diego must possess the following qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership (or related field) preferred, and/or California Administrative Credential. A candidate from out of state should have the equivalent credential.
Have a minimum five years of successful administrative experience in Catholic schools
Skills / Knowledge
Is a practicing Catholic with general knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith
Confirms knowledge of the Church’s mission in the Diocese of San Diego
Enforce all workplace policies contained in the MDCHS personnel handbook, including but not limited to, employee standards of conduct, policy against harassment, electronic communications policy, and social media policy
Displays excellent written and verbal communication skills
Spanish proficiency is helpful but not required
Demonstrates proficiency in technology usage and applications
Shows aptitude for effectively analyzing information
Quickly establishes rapport, relates to a variety of personalities and cultures
Works independently, and maintains strict confidentiality and professional ethics
Possesses professional temperament and appearance
Provide overall direction, and is responsible for supervision, evaluation, and professional development of all personnel under his/her direction, to include, but not limited to Assistant Principals, teachers, counselors, coaches, and staff.
