Rowland Hall is looking for an enthusiastic, creative, and innovative colleague to participate in the process of continuous improvement of the teaching and learning experience in the Mathematics Department. In recent years, the Mathematics Department has been working on responding to the calls by the professional organizations invested in creating opportunities for all students to engage in meaningful and important mathematical work. College and career readiness is an important goal of high school mathematics education; it is not a sole reason we engage in mathematical work. We aim to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to understand and solve important problems that our world faces, doing so in a compassionate and caring way. We are looking for a colleague devoted to helping students develop critical thinking skills through mathematics work, bolster their identities as quantitative thinkers, and push against historical stereotypes in mathematics and other quantitative sciences.
Primary Job Responsibilities
A member of the Mathematics Department will:
Teach a variety of mathematics and interdisciplinary courses
Participate actively in collaborative efforts of the department in improving and creating curriculum to support student learning and the mission of the department and the school
Lead or assist with an experience during Interim, a week of experiential-learning opportunities for students in grades nine through eleven
Participate in all-school, division, and department meetings
There are opportunities to contribute in other capacities such as coaching and supporting the advisory program. Additional responsibilities will depend on skill set and interest.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful applicant will have a broad mathematics teaching background focused on providing transformative experiences for their students. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an ability to nurture students’ varied mathematical identities. They will work actively to break down stereotypes and barriers to participation of groups traditionally marginalized in mathematical spaces. We are looking for a teacher with excellent interpersonal skills, a sense of humor, and a commitment to reflecting on their practice and continuously improving it. Strong candidates will be dedicated to team work and be comfortable sharing their classroom space with colleagues. A bachelor’s degree in mathematics is required; a master’s degree and teaching experience are preferred. In addition, the ideal candidate:
has the ability and interest to work with students at different grade and skill levels; demonstrates commitment to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion;
is able to incorporate problem- and inquiry-based learning in their curriculum;
has experience with or is excited about integrated mathematics curriculum;
is interested in collaborating with members of the mathematics, science, and socials science departments and building interdisciplinary coursework that illustrates the value mathematics brings to solving problems in different disciplines;
is a fluent technology user both in mathematics and teaching applications;
values and seeks out professional learning and development opportunities; and is apprised of research and recommendations about best teaching practices through membership in professional teaching organizations.
This is a full-time, exempt position beginning August 1, 2021 that reports to the Upper School Principal. With the uncertainty of teaching and learning in covid times, candidates may be asked to participate in professional learning and team-building prior to the start date. If required, this work would be compensated.
