Under the direction of a cabinet Chief, the Director of Secondary Education is responsible for the planning, administering and directing all of the division’s secondary, to include middle schools, high schools, alternative schools, and adult education programs in accordance with the district’s Strategic Plan, district policies, Board priorities, and state and federal guidelines. The Director provides administrators, certificated staff, and classified staff with leadership, instructional strategies and techniques to improve services to all students.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from a cabinet Chief. Supervises classified and certificated employees as assigned.
Plans, administers, and directs the division’s secondary education programs.
Establishes and monitors procedures for the secondary education instructional program.
Provides leadership and support to secondary administrators in the areas of monitoring and improving student outcomes.
Coaches secondary school administrators and staff on school reform and overall instructional improvement.
Oversees the progress of each secondary school relating to state and federal accountability programs, district goals, and WASC accreditation.
Directly supervises and evaluates secondary school principals and the instructional delivery systems to ensure that secondary standards and the curriculum of the district are effectively taught.
Supervises the observation and evaluation of effective learning and classroom instruction.
Works closely with other Educational Services directors, coordinators, and administrators.
Assists the human resources department in determining staff allocations and with interviewing and recommending qualified candidates for secondary education professional staff positions.
Provides leadership in developing curriculum for new courses.
Coordinates the development of new curriculum implementation.
Models exemplary leadership practices at all times.
Attends District Board meetings, as needed.
Develops, implements, monitors and revises curriculum for CTE education.
Coordinates cooperative education programs in business and marketing instructional areas.
Assists in the development and implementation of district and regional CTE initiatives by providing leadership in support of secondary initiatives, specifically in the areas of dual enrollment articulation and career pathways.
Researches best instructional practices and resource support for school sites leading toward school reform efforts with focus on improving the instructional program quality.
Participates in the development of long range plans, strategies, and implementation activities including educational technology, to support the instructional program.
Provides instructional support to all sites in monitoring the attainment of district wide goals focusing on student achievement and parent involvement.
Coordinates compliance with County, State, and Federal Agencies and requests for data, reports and other required information related to assigned programs.
Provides direct supervision and presentation of effective resources, teaching strategies, and activities to improve student outcomes for all student groups.
Develops and coordinates, in conjunction with administrators, district-wide in-service education and staff development training in accordance with categorical program requirements.
Organizes, develops, coordinates, and encourages, in conjunction with administrators, parent/community participation in special projects through advisory committees, parent training, conferences, and workshops.
Develops presentations for staff, administrators, and the Board of Education regarding special projects.
Serves as liaison between other school districts and agencies, County Office of Education and the Federal and State agencies.
Maintains records, initiates, and develops all reports requisite to programs and projects.
Develops, monitors, and interprets, in conjunction with staff and administrators, categorical programs, and budgets for all student populations, excluding special education.
Collaborates with District staff in the development of the District Technology Plan and supervision of the K-12 District Library and Classroom Library Plans.
Develops recommended policies and regulations related to instructional programs for all students.
Conducts and participates in workshops, conferences, and professional meetings related to assignments.
Evaluates certificated and classified staff assigned to programs supervised.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Vision and experience in short and long range strategic planning.
Site level administrative experience required (Secondary level experience preferred).
Knowledge of secondary curriculum development.
Knowledge and experience with master schedule development at secondary level.
Familiarity and experience with Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).

Education and Experience:
Administrative Services Credential
Master’s Degree required
Five years experience as a secondary level site administrator
Secondary teaching experience

Efficient and effective organization and time management skills.
