Georgetown Day School (GDS) in Washington, DC, seeks a strategic thinker, experienced administrator, and practical visionary to serve as its next Director of Athletics. Founded as the first racially and religiously integrated school in the Nation’s Capitol, GDS continues to keep at the heart of its school mission the maintenance and cultivation of a just, ethical, and inclusive community. The new Director of Athletics (AD) will be joining the school at an auspicious moment in its 73-year history, as it looks forward to the opening of a unified campus in the fall of 2020. The unified campus will provide the athletics department with expanded athletic facilities including two double gyms, two wrestling rooms, two weight training rooms, and two playing fields.
Reporting to the Head of School and in concert with the Middle School and High School Principals, the Athletic Director will be invited to craft a new and expanded vision of the place and role of athletics at GDS. Ensuring that GDS fields teams that are mission aligned, competitive and a source of pride for the School will be a key focus for the AD.
The AD has direct responsibility for all aspects of the Middle and High School Athletics. As the lead administrator for the school’s athletic programs, the AD oversees the recruiting, training, and supervising of all coaches and athletic program volunteers and ensures that students participating in the school’s athletic programs are trained, coached, and supervised in a manner consistent with the school’s mission, policies, standards, and values.
The AD is expected to teach one course in the Physical Education Department and will coach on an as-needed basis in consultation with the head of school.
Key Areas of Focus:
The Athletic Director will provide leadership, strategic direction, policy development, and oversight for athletics throughout the school to ensure that GDS will:
provide outstanding opportunities for students to develop their athletic capacities in a manner consistent with the mission and educational philosophy of the school.
utilize the athletics program to foster school and community spirit
be competitive in the ISL and MAC
attract and retain strong student-athletes
ensure that the athletics program is informed by and is representative of the school’s commitment to diversity in its athletes and coaching staff
Duties and Responsibilities:
hiring, supervising, and evaluating coaches for all programs at both the Middle School and High School
scheduling and securing facility space for all Middle School and High School practices and games
coordinating the use of all school athletic facilities by groups outside the school in conjunction with the Facilities Manager.
coordinating gym maintenance and summer camps and activities with the Facilities Manager
maintaining full inventory of, and ordering as necessary, all uniforms and equipment for all teams
attend all league AD’s meetings.
ensuring officials are scheduled and contracts are issued for all school contests.
arranging transportation for all away and some home school contests
supervising middle school and high school athletic contests and acting as the host to officials and visiting schools
overseeing athletics budget
promoting GDS athletics through local media, social media, and GDS website and publications
observing coaches in practice and in competition to assess their knowledge of the sport, coaching practices, and ability to inspire and support their players
meeting regularly with each coach to ensure their understanding of and compliance with the school’s coaching philosophy, team and league rules, lettering policies.
meeting with each coach at the end of the season to review the season, set goals for program improvement, and ascertain program needs
fostering healthy parent-coach relationships and mediating conflicts between students, parents, and coaches, if they arise
supporting all teams equitably by regularly attending both home and away games and competitions
working with student-athletes, parents, coaches and college counselors to secure athletic exposure and college scholarships for talented student-athletes.
collecting and maintaining all athletic records, including team records, individual records, letters and awards, etc.
Bachelor's Degree, Master’s Degree preferred.
Coaching experience preferred.
Possess a broad knowledge of many sports.
Knowledge of the overall operations of an athletic program.
Proven ability to manage budget and personnel.
Strong communication, public relation, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and consistently meet deadlines
High level of integrity, diplomacy, and initiative
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Flexibility, sense of humor, and willingness to assist with administrative tasks in a fast-paced team environment
