Friends' Central School, an independent, coeducational, Quaker day school founded in 1845, and serving around 800 students in Nursery through grade 12, seeks a part time, experienced Upper School Visual Arts teacher. The Friends’ Central Arts Department provides diverse courses and extracurricular activities encompassing the visual and applied arts. A successful candidate will have both a passion for the subject matter and for teaching students with a wide range of abilities; ideally originating in their own creative practice. They should be able to provide technical instruction in an engaging manner while at the same time fostering creativity and problem solving. Such a candidate will be a team player interested collaboration, have excellent interpersonal skill, complement the perspectives of the existing department, and see the value of nurturing the whole child. This ten-month position will report to the Upper School Principal.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities include the following:
Teaching a variety of media including but not limited to: drawing, observational painting and possibly a partially to fully computer-based course (for example architecture, graphic design or film).
Showcasing student work on campus (in our gallery) and off campus (InterAc show)
Working with members of the department to create a vibrant gallery that showcases student work
Participation in the annual inter-school art show
Working to continue to develop the curriculum.
Serving as a student advisor
Helping students create portfolios for college applications
Manage permanent art collection
Other duties as assigned
BA or BFA in related field required, MFA preferred
Bachelor or Graduate level degree
Experience teaching art to high-school aged students
Some background in art history would be helpful
