Under the supervision of the Lower School Principal, the Lower School Counselor will serve as the link between home, school, and the community. As a member of the Lower School administrative team, this position will promote and support students’ academic and social success by providing services which include, prevention programs (violence prevention, conflict resolution, anti-bullying strategies, peer mediation, and character education) collaboration with community agencies on behalf of students and their families, providing information and referral to community agencies and private therapists, providing crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, assisting in the development and support of behavioral intervention strategies, parent education and training, staff development, all of which is done using best practices and implementation of the latest research in innovative education.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Provides counseling to individual and whole classes/grades in order to guide students as they develop skills in the area of emotional, social, behavioral well-being.
Provides counseling services and effective parenting strategies to parents of students who need guidance
Assists in the referral process to community professionals for students or parents who need more assistance than a school counselor can provide.
Provides consultation and collaborative services to teachers, principals, counselors, and other school personnel
Collaborates with educational staff to determine which interventions are working, to communicate evaluation results, and to discuss and develop prevention goals
Provides crisis intervention services
Develops proactive programs (i.e. peer mediation, conflict resolution, character development) and provides daily whole class instruction in these areas.
Provides parent education through parent coffees, parenting workshops on Love and Logic and dissemination of written material.
Advises principal on the observations made of individual students and faculty members during recess and lunch time.
Trains and coordinates the Peace Maker Program
Organizes wellness programs for student assemblies
Orders, Organizes, and coordinates proctoring for CTP-4 Standardized Exams
Attends all Student Success Teams
A member of the Student Life Committee
Performs other duties as required
