The Director of College Counseling will have overall responsibility for leading the college counseling program, grades 9 through 12. In addition, Director of College Counseling will be responsible for overseeing a small college counseling staff to include another College Counselor and an Administrative Assistant to College Counseling.
Candidates must be experienced, dynamic, highly organized, and able to work collaboratively. Excellent communication skills, both in writing and public speaking, are required. The successful candidate will have the ability to work effectively with students and their families and have a proven track record of guiding students from first contact through to college admission. In addition, the Director of College Counseling should be prepared to be involved in the life of the school community. Travel to colleges and universities will be required.
Works in close association with, and reports to the High School Principal.
Ensures the smooth Coordination of SAT exams, including scheduling test dates, registering students, working with Learning Services to arrange "prep" sessions, administering the tests, hiring proctors and ensuring compliance with modifications.
Works closely High School Secretary and Registrar to ensure records of graduating seniors are kept up to date and effectively communicated to colleges and universities
Addresses and communicates with parents and students regarding the various stages of college counseling and thoroughly explains each stage.
Enhances and implements grades 9 through 12 college counseling program
Oversees and coordinates the faculty writing of recommendations for students applying to college, and teaches new faculty members how to write recommendations.
Provides students and their parents with informative and up-to-date College Counseling resources.
Uses existing resources to help students to find resources for scholarships and financial aid for colleges and universities
Invites and coordinates college visitors to Carrollwood Day School
Continues to establish and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with college admission staffs.
Represents the school at relevant state and national conferences and workshops, including but not limited to, NACAC.
Works with the High School Principal to establish and maintain annual college counseling budget.
Prepares and implements communications, as needed, with Board of Trustees for reporting purposes as directed by Head of School.
Optimizes use of Naviance and Senior Systems to maintain and disseminate information effectively.
Has ability to guide international students through all aspects of college counseling process and communicate with international offices at various colleges and universities
Performs other duties as assigned by the High School Principal.
Candidates must have earned at least a B.A., advanced degree preferred. At least five years of experience as a College Counselor in an independent school or as a college admissions officer is required. The successful candidate will have excellent writing and verbal communication skills. In addition, s/he will have the ability to listen, empathize, support, guide, and counsel families wisely, appropriately, and tactfully. The College Counselor will maintain complete confidentiality. The willingness to support the school’s mission and the ability to work collegially with faculty and administration is a must. This position requires effective mentoring skills, strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
