MMI Preparatory School, www.mmiprep.org, is a co-educational, independent day school serving 250 students in grades 6-12. Founded in 1879 as the Mining and Mechanical Institute by engineer and businessman Eckley B. Coxe and his wife Sophia, the school provided local workers with training and advancement opportunities in the Pennsylvania coal mining industry. The college preparatory curriculum was added in the early 1900’s, and the school began accepting girls in 1970, at which time the name was changed. The Coxes began a tradition of student tuitions being subsidized to give deserving area children the opportunity to attend, and through a strong endowment, that support continues today.
MMI is a college preparatory school with a mission and culture that remain true to the vision of its founders: to provide a quality education to motivated young people regardless of socioeconomic status. Through a strong emphasis on character, MMI empowers students to realize their potential and to be good citizens in their communities.
MMI’s 25-acre campus includes a well-appointed school building that has been expanded in recent years to include an Athletic & Drama Complex, a Science & Technology wing and a Library and Learning Center addition. The campus includes updated, enviable athletic fields and a walking trail. Freeland is a small, quiet, historic town. Faculty speak of the area as a wonderful place to raise a family. The surrounding area includes numerous options for outdoor enthusiasts, including Lehigh Gorge Trail and the Pocono Mountains. Philadelphia, New York City, Harrisburg and Baltimore are all within a 2-3 hour drive. Both Wilkes-Barre and Scranton are less than an hour away.
